Christmas Songs

I have a love/hate relationship with Christmas music. I like it at appropriate times. Like when I’m baking cookies to give out to everyone or Christmas morning while opening gifts and eating those special pancakes my brother makes (the ones he uses up all the expensive extracts I buy for my cookies and cakes, etc). I hate being forced to listen to it before Thanksgiving til after the new year begins.. And the radio stations here in Philadelphia are utterly ridiculous. Not just one, but TWO have been playing nonstop Christmas songs since before Thanksgiving. Perhaps I’m making a big deal out of nothing at all.. but people who listen to music other than rap, r&b, and jazz hardly have anything to listen to in Philly as it is. We’ve got two rock stations left and after Howard Stern goes off the air, one of them is making a leap to an all-talk station.

What was I complaining about? Oh yeah.. Christmas music. I’m pretty much open to Christmas music. I don’t discriminate, I listen to everything. Come to think of it, that’s not exactly true. I really don’t dig that whole comedy Christmas thing. Grandma Got Run Over By a Reindeer? No thanks. Bubblegum Christmas? Again, no thanks. So I stayed up last night trying to come up with my own Christmas album and I did and I love it. And I uploaded it to my Dell DJ and I’m actually listening to it while going to work or doing the dishes (yes I wear my mp3 player while doing dishes). Here’s the listing:

1) Chris Cornell – Ave Maria
2) Tom Jones & Cerys Matthews – Baby, it’s Cold Outside
3) Tom Petty & the Heartbreakers – Christmas, All Over Again
4) The Waitresses – Christmas Wrapping
5) Smashing Pumpkins – Christmastime
6) The Kinks – Father Christmas
7) Fiona Apple – Frosty the Snowman
8) John Lennon – Happy Christmas (War is Over)
9) Coldplay – Have Yourself a Merry Little Christmas
10) Jimmy Eat World – Last Christmas
11) Jessica & Ashlee Simpson – Little Drummer Boy
12) The Ramones – Merry Christmas (I Don’t Want to Fight Tonight)
13) Tracy Chapman – O Holy Night
14) No Doubt – Oi to the World
15) Jon Bon Jovi – Please Come Home for Christmas
16) Ronnie Spector & Darlene Love – Rockin’ Around the Christmas Tree
17) Madonna – Santa Baby
18) Cyndi Lauper – Silent Night
19) Queen – Thank God it’s Christmas
20) The Flaming Lips – White Christmas
21) Phantom Planet – Winter Wonderland
22) Brian Setzer – You’re a Mean One, Mr. Grinch

I also downloaded George Michael’s version of ‘Last Christmas’. I just love how breathy his voice sounds. I’m trying to think of any songs to add to my growing list. No Rat Pack, Elvis, Bing or Perry. Too many of those CDs as it is.
